The Art Motel stood as the multicolored crown jewel of the weekend. This hands-on, multisensory installation is composed of various rooms showcasing the work of dozens of artists and creators using every media imaginable. From the second floor art walls to the zany chalk drawings under your feet, every inch of the Art Motel was covered in beautiful imagery and more colors than a jumbo Crayola box. There was even a mural-painting robot…
The Art Motel was hands-down one of the most creative aspects of this year’s fest, in which over 30 artists and progressive galleries worked together to completely transform every room of a long-shuttered Las Vegas motel into an interactive space. I, like most everyone who attended Life Is Beautiful this year, marveled at all the exceptional art hiding around every corner…
The 2015 Life Is Beautiful Festival held in Las Vegas, Nevada, gets all the praise this past weekend for keeping music lovers, foodies, and art enthusiasts completely engulfed in the beauty that arts of all kinds possess. From the Art Motel to the many surprises that the festival rolled out, Life Is Beautiful did not disappoint…
..the Art Motel is a commitment, and it’s one you should make, because this converted motel represents the Las Vegas art scene in miniature. Here you’ll find solo exhibitions by Juan Muniz, Anthony Bondi, 3 Baaad Sheep and many more, alongside curated exhibitions from Sin City Gallery, Lil’ Art Bodega and other local gallerists. Nearly every medium will be represented at Art Motel, from acrylics to robotics. It’s a must-see.
One thing that stuck out the most? The amount of unique art that was scattered throughout the venue. There was an Art Motel, which boasted rooms decorated independently by various artists. Individually, each room was unique and caused you to really think about the message the artist intended for you. Collectively, the Art Motel was a visual masterpiece that stitched together art of many kinds into one interesting jumble of art.

The coolest change to Downtown was the old Motel 6 that was converted into a realistic art motel. The “courtyard” was filled with a wide range of art displays. Each room was open to the public with additional art that varied from room to room. It was pretty impressive and I spent a good amount of time at the Motel 6, walking around and enjoying the sights. Even though some of the art was not quite to my taste and I admit that some of it went over my head completely, but I found some of it to be fascinating and took my time taking it all in. In whatever it’s form, art is beautiful and this festival took it to the next level by allowing art to transform a portion of a city that was run down and tired and turning it into something incredible.
One of the first to view the amazing transformation was superstar Las Vegas singer Wayne Newton. He talked with many of the artists as they gave him a tour as “Old Vegas met New Vegas meeting Old Vegas.” It’s safe to report that Wayne and the artists were excited being there together…
Brand new for this year is the ART MOTEL at the former Town Lodge motel…this vacant motel and courtyard has been transformed into an eclectic pop-up exhibition with work by artists including Begson founder and Vegas resident Craig Holden Feinberg, art rug artisans Soho Design House and dronesmith experts Skyworks Aerial Systems…

The Mystic Midway was very gratified to work with such a stellar group of artists, musicians and event producers at the Art Motel. Moments like collaborating with Meow Wolf on a transitional environment or working with improvisational actors from Las Vegas’s own Cockroach Theatre was an absolute thrill. The Mystic Midway Art Motel immersive environment consisted of gorgeous over-sized props, carnival sets, spinner wheels and multiple paths of game board squares painted directly on the ground. This setting was brought to life by a trained ensemble of in-character improv performers, stilters and circus folks who guided thousands of delighted guests around the gameboard…
The Mystic Midway is a community, a performance troupe, a roving carnival, and a strategy for connecting people in a whimsical, playful and creative way. It’s made up of professional actors, dancers, clowns, mystics, social activists, musicians, costume designers, graphic artists and more…
“It’s in the realm of game-ification,” Levkoff says. “I’m really into integrating new technologies with old school theater…”

I highly recommend stepping into the Art Motel. It’s an actual old motel with gutted rooms that take you into a universe with submarine scenes, snakes and carnival type decor. And from the photos and video below, you’ll see it’s fully interactive…

The Art Motel – This abandoned hotel transformed into a pop-up museum that could only be found in downtown Las Vegas, In fact, the original call for artists from Life is Beautiful announced 80% of the artists featured in the motel would be locals and teased, “Each of the 15 motel rooms are approximately 10′ x 10′, with primed white walls. The entire room is your canvas. Each of the large courtyard murals are approximately 8′ x 20′. There is no creative spec. What would you like to create?” And create they did. Everything from a blue neon sign that simply stated, “live” to a room plastered with original black and white wallpaper featuring llamas and phrases that echoed the sentiment, “create.” Our favorite room, though, featured a bar with two stools, a chandelier and a painting. The twist? They were all stationed on a vertical wall, making the room appear to have been turned on its side. Watching festival-goers position themselves in the room and help each other figure out the most gravity-defying poses inspired some truly creative interactions. We could spent much more time here…
Perhaps the biggest headliner at Life Is Beautiful 2015 was the Art Motel…a former motel where every room has been converted into an interactive art installation. Everything from photo galleries to brilliant murals and mind-blowing art in every direction beautified the once decrepit rooms of the abandoned motel…
Part of the magic of the motel is how it’s connecting different communities…
“We’ve been totally spiritually aligned with the festival, with the Downtown Project, with just the overall aesthetic of Downtown (Las Vegas),” Vince Kadlubek, CEO, of Meow Wolf, said. “This is like being very much at home here.”

Santa Fe arts crew and production company Meow Wolf brought a dozen artists to create interactive installations in four rooms. Each has a different theme, such as the neon room, which also features two free-play arcade machines with recreated cases…a rococo room and a room with a laser harp that allows you to strum and pluck light beams. It’s a tiny sampling of a giant installation Meow Wolf is currently constructing in Santa Fe, and it may very well be the first of many Las Vegas exhibits for the collective…
‘Like nothing you’ve ever seen before’: Meow Wolf’s art mansion of fun should open early next year
Meow Wolf has produced immersive and interactive art since 2008. For Life Is Beautiful, participants will be treated to a preview of their work “The House of Eternal Return,” Meow Wolf’s collaboration with Game of Thrones author George RR Martin.
Whether it was colorful engravings on the pavement or larger-than-life sized murals or even the numerous installations located in the Art Motel, visions of inspiration danced around downtown Las Vegas keeping timelines on tilt. Artists and curators like SOHO DESIGN HOUSE, 3 BAAAD SHEEP and Daniel Smith (WNBA star Skylar Diggins’ fiancee who created the above tribute to your favorite hip-hop artists) lit up the festival grounds with their work, without even rocking the mic or a DJ set. Meet Hubo, the Mural-Painting Robot at Life Is Beautiful…
Daniel Smith, a young athlete-turned-artist from South Bend, IN, is making his public debut at the motel. A wide receiver at Notre Dame, he broke his leg during his senior year in 2014. Devoting his energy elsewhere, he focused on his second passion of art. His two installations have turned heads for his use of abstract geometric patterns.One features 3-D patterns with reflective pieces that spell “Life Is Beautiful” in a shattered cursive that’s easy to miss if you don’t view it from the correct angle. The other features 3-D cut-outs of iconic rap artists from both coasts and from the new and old school sitting atop the Golden Gate and Brooklyn Bridges...
One of my favorite spots was the Art Motel. This was an old motel where each room was given to a different artist. The artist (or in some cases multiple artists) then created their own unique exhibit. It was amazing to walk from room to room and see what each artist created with the space…There was art everywhere you looked and sometimes hidden secretly waiting for you to discover it. From beautiful typography to geometric prints there was art for everyone…

The Art Motel gets better and better every year…
Members from the local chapter of Best Buddies, an international nonprofit that creates friendships for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, created an installation and collaborated with artist Casey O’Connell for a mural. The mural was unveiled at a preview Wednesday evening that even featured a visit from Best Buddies supporter Wayne Newton. “We wanted to highlight and thank the community that’s making Downtown a much more inclusive, diverse place,” Jason Smith, the state director for Best Buddies, said. “Everything that Best Buddies is about is that full integration and everybody that’s a part of this project is a living breathing example of bringing that out to the world.”
A personal favorite was the surreal art motel, a tatterdemalion building converted into an art exhibit where each guest room was designed by an artist to be a stimulating display…

Art-creating drones and a humanoid robot have begun work at the new Art Motel, with the entire building including rooftop and courtyard coming to life as a showcase for dozens of local and global artists creating visual and multimedia installations…
Another installation will feature spectacular high-tech art created through the unique alliance of drones and multicolored laser beams. Skyworks Aerial Systems, the innovative Las Vegas-based robotics company, will be presenting its art and technology installation “Drones x Art,” with drones producing generative laser art. The mission of the presentation is to use lasers, lights and drone technology to transform an enclosed space and convey a sense of industrialism with a human touch…

“There’s not much happening on this desolate corner of downtown, and there hasn’t been for a long time,” said one exec. But that scene is about to change with the vacant motel poised to emerge as the center of the urban art universe…
Part of the magic of the motel is how it’s connecting different communities. Among the artists is UNLV’s Metal Rebel, a robot that is painting a dot matrix mural on the second level of the motel, bridging the worlds of art and science. “He’s doing it like Monet, one dot at a time. We’re developing an image that’s recognizable but if you get close enough, it kind of breaks down, just in the same way of when you look at a program and zoom into the individual lines of code, they’re completely useless,” Santiago Ricoy, a UNLV student on the robotics team, said. “It’s kind of a representation of himself, which is a very human thing to do.”
As part of its interdisciplinary approach to art at Life Is Beautiful, Art Motel will also be bringing us Hubo, a robot developed by a team of engineers at UNLV…
