UNLV’s humanoid robot, designed to save lives in disasters, will showcase a distinctly different talent at the annual art and music festival this weekend…
Part of the magic of the motel is how it’s connecting different communities.Among the artists is UNLV’s Metal Rebel, a robot that is painting a dot matrix mural on the second level of the motel, bridging the worlds of art and science. “He’s doing it like Monet, one dot at a time. We’re developing an image that’s recognizable but if you get close enough, it kind of breaks down, just in the same way of when you look at a program and zoom into the individual lines of code, they’re completely useless,” Santiago Ricoy, a UNLV student on the robotics team, said. “It’s kind of a representation of himself, which is a very human thing to do.”
As part of its interdisciplinary approach to art at Life Is Beautiful, Art Motel will also be bringing us Hubo, a robot developed by a team of engineers at UNLV…
Art-creating drones and a humanoid robot have begun work at the new Art Motel, with the entire building including rooftop and courtyard coming to life as a showcase for dozens of local and global artists creating visual and multimedia installations. Hubo is the mural-painting humanoid robot developed by visionaries at UNLV Drones and Autonomous Systems Lab. It weighs 176 pounds, stands 5-foot-9 and recently successfully navigated a simulated disaster zone for the U.S. Department of Defense. One of the first to view the amazing transformation was superstar Las Vegas singer Wayne Newton. He talked with many of the artists as they gave him a tour as “Old Vegas met New Vegas meeting Old Vegas.” It’s safe to report that Wayne and the artists were excited being there together…
One of many eye-catching installations at the Art Motel will be created by Hubo, a mural-painting humanoid robot developed by the visionaries at the UNLV Drones and Autonomous Systems Lab. Hubo, who stands 5-feet-9 and weighs 176 pounds, made his most recent appearance at the U.S. Department of Defense’s DARPA Robotics Challenge, where he navigated a simulated disaster zone. Hubo’s mission at Life is Beautiful will be decidedly different, as he is scheduled to show off his mural-painting skills in a masterly display of creating futuristic street art at the Art Motel.
